National Religious Secondary School (SMKA)
INTRODUCTION
The history of the establishment of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) began with the takeover of 11 State and People's Religious Schools by the Ministry of Education Malaysia in 1977. From these 11 SMKA schools, the number has since grown to 55 SMKA schools.
The initial idea for the establishment of SMKA was inspired by the then Director of the Religious Division of the Ministry of Education, the late Tuan Haji Nik Mohammed Mohyideen bin Haji Wan Musa. This was a shared aspiration of the Ministry of Education Malaysia and the conscious Islamic community. Prior to this, several steps had been taken to provide assistance to people's religious schools and to suggest that these schools adopt a new system.
The establishment of SMKA was in line with the efforts to modernize the national education system. The process of improving the Islamic education system in religious schools was aligned with contemporary developments. Therefore, the inspiration of the late Haji Nik Mohyideen Bin Haji Wan Musa was realized by Tan Sri Dato’ Paduka Dr. Abdul Hamid bin Othman and Dato Zainal Abidin bin Haji Abdul Kadir.
In the 1970s, people's religious secondary schools were not well-received due to their disorganized administration system and lack of infrastructure. At the same time, public awareness of education was increasing. Therefore, the Ministry of Education at that time engaged in discussions with the state governments in Peninsular Malaysia to harmonize the administration system and curriculum of religious schools with daily secondary schools.
Most religious schools at that time focused solely on Islamic Studies and Arabic language, neglecting other subjects such as Science, Mathematics, Geography, and others that existed in National Secondary Schools. This phenomenon occurred because religious schools could not afford expensive laboratory facilities. Consequently, graduates of religious schools were less competitive in the job market and faced challenges in contemporary society.
